Firstly, Atticus doesn’t just defend Tom Robinson, he puts himself in danger to protect Tom. Atticus’s morals are as strong as his physical strength. Atticus stands up for himself when it comes to racial profiling and defending a black man. By doing so Atticus exposed himself and his family to other difficulties. Secondly, when Atticus is seen in the courthouse protecting Tom and the mob comes, Atticus knows what is going to happen to him and he is accepting his fate. Atticus is unarmed. He is willing to sacrifice his life to save Tom. The only actual fear Atticus shows is when Dill, Scout, and Jem show up. This is when Atticus is the most scared. Atticus fears the worst for his children and Dill. Finally, Atticus shows courage by killing the mad dog. When the rabid dog shows up on the street Calpurnia calls Atticus and tells him to com quickly. When Atticus and the sheriff show up to kill the dog the sheriff cannot kill the dog and asks Atticus to do it. At first he is hesitant, then he aims, fires, and kills the dog. Atticus had never told his children that he was once the best marksman in all of Maycomb County. When Scout wonders why Atticus had never told them Miss Maudie says “People in their right mind never take pride in their talents…” (Lee 98). Atticus did not tell his children that he was the best marksman in Maycomb because he’s a gentlemen and feel as if bragging about your talents is not
