As time on the Seahawk passes by, she realizes what hardworking men the crew is, unlike the scum she thought they were before. Charlotte’s inner feelings about the crew have changed pretty immensely. As stated in the book, Charlotte says,”But as I grew more comfortable, the crew grew more comfortable with me, and I mingled more often on the deck with them.” This quote shows that when she got to socialize with the men more, she started to admire their experience and hard work even more, instead of judging their facial appearances. Zachariah is the one that Charlotte has fastened her particular attention to because he was the one who took care of her daily needs and could spend the most time with her. Zachariah was also the most experienced on this ship and had the most wisdom on the Seahawk. As she commences to think about the crew and Zachariah differently, we see that Charlotte is slowly starting to admire his kindness and dexterity by thinking, “As might be, I fastened particular attention to Zachariah. When young, he had shipped as a common sailor.” This quote shows that Charlotte admires and appreciates his experience from a young age. Zachariah was after all the oldest of the crew on this ship.
