True Bruin Reflective Report

Improved Essays
The "True Bruin" philosophy resonated with me both professionally and personally as I researched the institution and academic and student services (AS2). I have only gotten this far with integrity, ambition, service, and immense support. I am passionate about helping students who have challenges that may affect their ability to be independently successful academically; transitioning new student-athletes to college, and developing part time support staff. In my experience, the student-athlete population that I have worked with has invaluable skills and talents beyond their athletics ability. These skills and talents are realized due in no small part to the support staff. I want to be a part of this support staff.

Why do you want to be staff? : I feel that having this rank will show that I have the opportunity to be a helper on this server. Lots of people tend to need help when there is conflicts in chat. To get an understanding of the significance of interscholastic competition at the collegiate level, simply turn on the television on a Saturday morning during college football. The sponsors, fans, pageantry, etc., is astronomical and continues to grow exponentially. Undoubtedly, college athletics is “big business” and is often viewed as a separate entity. Duke professor of public policy, economics and law, Charles T. Clotfelter, offers an interesting viewpoint on college athletics, stating faculty members’ blindness to the significance of big-time sports amounts to operating in a parallel universe, which is impossible, because the evidence is all around us and so commonplace (Etizen, 2012). Its difficulty to disagree with Clotfelter because sports are deeply rooted in our society.…

I identify greatly with the vision at Santa Clara University. Ever since I was young, I have dreamt of changing the world for the better. I hoped one day I could save the world from itself. To be the superhero that would swipe away the conflict and pain that is ever present in today’s media. While the dreams of saving the innocent from super villains has faded, the backbone and underlying foundation has not dissolved.…

As a freshman football player at Missouri Southern State University, I am fresh off the recruiting process. The recruiting process is an exact example of what Edmundson was speaking of when it comes to the business aspect of universities. From looking at other colleges and going on visits to different schools, I got a high dose of what it feels like to be a customer rather than a student. It felt like no matter where I went, the first thing I saw was the nicest facilities the school had to offer. Indoor practice facilities, locker rooms, recreational centers, dining halls, on campus housing and dorms, and even sites and hot spots around the town I could hang out at and meet people.…

Growing up in the United States the individualistic goals of our society are incredibly apparent. The whole premise of the American Dream is to do well for yourself, to raise your own family in your own home with your own car. But this dream that we have built for ourselves lacks depth and longevity. It is a simplistic, selfish, and senseless ambition. I believe, as human beings, we desire more than to help ourselves.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Outside of my academic activities, I have a strong passion for sports and exercise. As a student-athlete for over 14 years, I have learned the value of hard-work, dedication, and determination. Establishing these invaluable attributes early on made it possible for me to become an NCAA Division III lacrosse athlete. Sports dramatically shaped the person I am today and taught me how to step to work in unison with my teammates to achieve a common goal and simultaneously step up as a leader.…

Students that have been privileged with an athletic scholarship to play in collegiate sports have to understand that it is not a profession but a linkage to develop contacts with influencers and gatekeepers that will impact their future success into the national leagues or other areas of interest.
