I awoke to the familiar sound of squeaking and rattling just in time to see my uncle take a wide and calculated right turn into 119th street. As we began to ascend the steep gravel road, the truck began to tremble as my uncle struggled to keep the clutch from slipping. When we finally reached the top, the smell of burnt clutch filled my lungs. I opened the window to get a fresh breath, but the burst of piercing December air made me shut the window as fast as my stiffened body would allow. To this day I’m not sure why my uncle trusted his rusted black 1971 chevy truck, it was practically crumbling apart. But we had to rely on that truck every day for the drive to work through the pitch-black 14 mile ride through the pothole filled back-roads; riddled with patches of ice. In the distance, a mix of red, green, and blue dots illuminated through the thick, smoky fog. We cautiously inched our way towards the flickering specks relying on truck’s dim yellow headlights to guide us. With every sway of the truck, the lights began to clear. I could distinguish that the lights lined the roof of a muddy trailer with a small window in the side. The lights continued around an unfamiliar group of letters that eventually would be embroiled in my head: Holiday Tree Farms Inc. …show more content…
We pulled up to a gravel parking lot. As I got off, I heard the sound of crackling under my feet from the freshly crystallized morning dew. Walking towards the colorfully lighted trailer I noticed frozen puddles, and curiosity eventually got the best of me. I leaped onto a puddle already imagining the feeling of the shattered ice beneath me, but all I succeeded was slipping on the solid chunk of ice. Embarrased, I picked myself up hoping that the dark of night had hidden my clumsy behavior. At least my blushing cheeks had returned some warmth back to my

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

Ted's wishes By jacob Kothe When it comes to driving a stick shift manual car, you can get a little stressed out. What I mean by that when you're driving around the neighborhood with your instructor (my dad) he makes you turn, a lot stop on hills, and insures that you stop at a stop sign, when you think that he insures that you stop at stop signs you think of something else. You have to go up to the sign and push down on the clutch. And stop at the sign press down the gas and slowly let off the clutch. You would think that's pretty easy, but if you overload the transmission, then your car dies, you have to start it back up and if you you let of the clutch off to fast the car starts bouncing and won't stop bouncing so you just keep bouncing.…

In a tiny, run-down bar on the sketchy side of town, I sit at a booth with a hardened, grizzled war veteran who was drowning his sorrows with cheap liquor out of amber-tinted shot glass. Consequently,—because of Veteran's Day—in honour of those who served, I was asked to interview Colonel William Cohen McAdams—who served in the army, airforce, and the navy SEALs—for an article in the university paper. He was a decent-looking fellow—for someone who was missing an eye. Ironically enough, he catches more with one eye than anyone else does with two. He lost it to a shrapnel grenade during his fifth and final tour of duty—I’d later learn.…

It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

It’s the calm of the morning, and I’m tired. The smooth and curving edges of the trail entertain my eyes as I hike towards my goal, the summit of Mt. Hyndman. The Key Problem was that another relevant social group (GM) was using its forces to remove all active EV1s from the roads. The drivers implemented Problem-Solving Strategies in an attempt to foil GM’s plan. They protested the decision to recollect the EV1s, campaigning to educate people about the existence and advantages of the EV1, and even camping outside the lots where the discarded EV1s were sent to “die.” When the EV1 drivers found the lots where the cars were being kept they stayed outside, camping 24/7 to “guard” the cars.…
