In the video “Greek Tragedy,” Grant Voth explains the meaning of Greek “tragedy.” It could be defined as a serious play or written work, one which shows that a person’s sins lead to consequences. An example of a literary work that held meaning to Greek tragedy was a trilogy of Aeschylus. The trilogy is composed of difficult choices that characters have to decide upon and whom gained consequences based on their actions. In the first book of the trilogy, after fighting from the Trojan War, Agamemnon was murdered by his wife Cassandra and her lover.…

In order to prove that Troy, the ancient city in Homer's Iliad, was true, an amateur German archeologist named Heinrich Schliemann excavated a hill, Hissarlik, in, back then, the Ottoman Empire, in the year 1871. He found which is believed to be Troy, and several other cities from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. And either on or about May 27, 1873, Schliemann reported, "In excavating this wall further and directly by the side of the palace of King Priam, I came upon a large copper article of the most remarkable form, which attracted my attention all the more as I thought I saw gold behind it. In order to withdraw the treasure from the greed of my workmen, and to save it for archaeology, …I immediately had "paidos" (lunch break) called. ….While the men were eating and resting, I cut out the treasure with a large knife….…

Agamemnon feels false his claims to have trusted the gods who all along had the destruction of Troy in mind. “First, it is right that I address Argos and the gods of this land-my allies who helped me exact justice from Priam’s city and return home safely”(Meineck, 32). The Greek commander is showing his gratitude to the gods whom at one point he questioned during the actual battle of Troy. He seems to only be thanking them because he was victorious and worked in his favor. He also discredits the very men that fought alongside in him the Trojan war.…

When most people think of the term “hero” they think of comic book characters with superpowers or role models who have admirable traits. For some, the thought of a “tragic hero” could seem somewhat contradicting and confusing. However, the Greek philosopher Aristotle defines a tragic hero as a character who, for the most part, is a good person but suffers from his or her hamartia and hubris, which ultimately leads to their downfall and recognition of their poor choices as well as the reversal of their situation. The play Fences written by August Wilson describes the struggles and hardships of an African-American family attempting to live the American Dream in the 1950s. Although some may argue that the main character, Troy, is not a tragic…

Myles Weber, author of “Rescuing the Tragic Bully in August Wilson’s Fences”, proclaims that Troy is a thief and murderer in his youth, commits a full array of errors in middle age: He cheats on his wife, he exploits his brain-damaged brother, he covets and then blocks his son’s promising future, he speaks endlessly but doesn’t listen (Weber 673). Death is a complex and often agonizing phenomenon which many writers incorporate into their literature in order to unfold a personal understanding of death or to demonstrate the various roles which death can play. Writers typically use death as a motif to reinforce a theme hidden in the core of a story or an overarching truth pointing to the moral of the story. In August Wilsons’ Fences, the motif of death arguably acts as a character in the play. Death is repeatedly personified and metaphorically compared to baseball. The frequent presence of death as a character in the play reinforces the theme that death is an inevitable force.…

Andromache knows the drawbacks in Hector’s personality very well; in the dialogue, she points out that Hector is—“reckless” and has self-destroying “fiery courage”.(VI. 482) Despite being the mightiest warrior in the Trojan army, Hector is an imprudent leader, acting arbitrarily and failing to take other’s advices.…
