Discovery of Troy and Cnossos The modern world had considered Troy a matter of myth, not reality. “The name Troy refers both to a place in legend and a real-life archaeological site.” (Jarus) Troy, in legend, is a city that was besieged for 10 years and conquered by a Greek army led by King Agamemnon. According to Homer’s “Iliad,” the reason for the Trojan War was the abduction of a queen from Sparta, Helen, by the son of King Priam, Paris. It also refers to a real ancient city located on the northwest coast of Turkey, which since antiquity, has been identified as the Troy discussed in the Iliad. In the 19th century, the idea that the city was Troy came to attention when Schliemann conducted a series of excavations at Hisarlik and discovered treasures claimed to be from King Priam..
