I do not follow his football career; therefore, I cannot judge his athletic ability.…

She is trying to get Troy to see that the football could help Cory at possibly getting into a college which could have helped him in the future. Unfortunately, Troy doesn’t want to listen to her. He did not know what his dad was capable of, or did not know how he made his wealth, if he was an honest man or not. Troy could have been fooled by his dad if it wasn’t for his mom keeping his conscience clear and straightforward. The lessons demostrated in the novel by Troy, the football genius, are trust, honesty, and communication. It is important to have all three of these while going through life and the author Tim Green does an excellent job of creating a compelling story for young people who could compare the situation to their own life. In his novel he doesn’t just give the example, he follows up with a why and a how, being completely clear on not just the basic lessons, but how those lessons can be applied to real world situations.…

To identify Troy as the tragic hero, one must identify his tragic flaw. However, as the play progresses it becomes apparent that Troy is flawed with many things. Myles Weber, author of “Rescuing the Tragic Bully in August Wilson’s Fences”, proclaims that Troy is a thief and murderer in his youth, commits a full array of errors in middle age: He cheats on his wife, he exploits his brain-damaged brother, he covets and then blocks his son’s promising future, he speaks endlessly but doesn’t listen (Weber 673). First, the audience is confronted with Troy’s failure to support Cory. He is blocking his son’s promising future out of pure jealousy.…
