Catterall mentions how badly the Civil War disrupted the economy of Hartsville and surrounding farms, entirely. The Union forces occupied Hartsville for the vast majority of the war. Although Colonel Morgan's raid was a minor setback for the North’s war efforts, the Union troops began to recapture the town.
