Tropical Smoothie: A Social Norm Analysis

Improved Essays
I had to violate a social norm so I decided to go to Tropical Smoothie where I used to work. After ordering a smoothie and a flatbread I waited and complimented them on how fast I received the product. So I tried to tip them through the drive through window which is not accustomed at fast food restaurants. I tried to hand the kid a 5 dollar bill and he did not know how to react. He eventually told me he was not allowed to accept tips for his service or he would be fired. I said “well thank you for the great service and I wish I could tip you, and have a good one!” I used to work at this Tropical Smoothie and I had only ever had one person try to tip me and it was a culture shock, it made me want to get a new job at a place that payed tips.

Waffle Now servers should have a higher payrate. The tipped minimum wage can not combat the inflation rates of today. If the tipped minimum wage has been the same since 1991, then that would mean it has been twenty-seven years since there has been an update in payment. Not to mention, that inflation has increased prices by 75% in these past twenty-four years. Waffle Now servers need a pay raise in order to have a livable wage.…

The article "Why Tipping Is Wrong" by the New York restaurateur Danny Meyer, talks about the pros and cons of tipping in restaurants. In my opinion, tipping should be optional to whom would like to leave a tip. I disagree with the article "Why Tipping Is Wrong" for the reason of people work hard to get your meal to you in a efficient manner and give you appreciable customer service. In the article "Why Tipping Is Wrong" states "Tipping has created a two-tiered wage system with deep social and economic consequences for millions". Throughout the article "Why Tipping Is Wrong" I realize that there are many different variations that tipping is being described as racism.…

Waffle Now is a restaurant that has, until now, chosen to pay their employees below minimum wage so that their servers can make up for what they do not revieve from the company in tips. The idea behind this is that the need for good tips from their costomers will create an incentive for employees doing well at their jobs. This is a plan that only works in theory, as there must always substanital tips from cusomers to fully make up for what the workers are not paid. Recently, the Waffle Now employees have found that the wages they recieve are simply not enough for them live on alone. Not only is this true, but they have also found that there is research on how this incentive-based tipping system is systematically broken, outside of Waffle Now and that other states have already begun to move away from tipping in its entirety.…

“The day in the life of the Cracker Barrel Waitress” Arlington, Texas - Three servers from the local Cracker Barrel know all the tips and tricks to getting the best tips and staying on top of the game when it comes to serving. Angelique Ochoa has been a server for just under a year and believe that it is her bubbling personality that gives her the edge in getting tips from her customers. “If you are rude to them and act like you don’t care about the customers, I guarantee that you would be lucky enough to even get two dollars from the,” says Ochoa. “I want them to know that I’m here to give them the best experience possible, so every time they come back they can request me as their server,” It is all about trying to make regulars here.”…

Restuarants are allowed to pay their tipped employees far less than minimum wage, and as a result, server's income depends mostly, and in some cases entirely, on tips. Many people believe that employers should have to pay tipped employees minimum wage, and there are good arguments on both sides of the issue. It seems strange that a person's paycheck would be dependent on the generosity of the people they serve. Technically tipping is not required, and unless they have worked in a restuarant themselves, people might not realize how important it is to a servers income. Despite this fact, the tradition of tipping is very established, and servers recieve a relatively consistent paycheck.…

Waffle Now Human Relations Officer, I think that Waffle Now servers should be paid the federal non-tipped wage. As of now we are being paid the U.S's minimum tipped wage. This wage has not been adjusted in years while the non-tipped wage has nearly doubled. Because us servers are being paid the minimum tipped wage we are forced to heavily depend on tips from customers. The average tip in similar resturaunts in the area is 16.6% which sounds great until you learn that you have to pay taxes on all tips, leaving you with what is actually most of the time less than the minimum tipped wage.…

I think employees who receive tips should be paid the same minimum wage as non tipped employees because tips are not reliable enough for employees to make a fair income. Higher pay for restaurant jobs will be a positive incentive for people to find jobs at restaurants. Refering to the "2014 Economic Policy Institute report" that said "workers who rely mainly on tips are more likely to need government assistance. " Less people will need government assistance if they are making a stable minimum wage like non tipped employees and this will leave more resources to the government for other valuable programs. Contrary to what is stated in Letter…

I am a server and I totally get why most waiters/waitress get mad when they don’t get tipped. Some people just don’t get the point of tipping their server. Some days are slow, and some days are extremely busy as a waiter or waitress. It is more than just taking someone’s order and bringing it to them. It never seems to fail that there will be that one group of people that doesn’t leave a tip no matter how hard the waitress works.…

From my experience working at minimum wage is very difficult. Its a strugle to pay for your food, bills, and most of all your children. Minimum wage is low as is, but you have some restarants who pay lower than minimum wage because of tips. I beleive that should be against the law. For most people it ends up less than what they would get paid if they were on minimum wage.…

Before I sat down on the bench I saw a little girl running towards her mother asking for a Slurpee from Subway that’s located inside Walmart. I selected this particular place because it’s a busy place to shop and get to see all activities from different strangers.…
