The action and adventure subgenre in movies has “long established features of Hollywood productions as well that of other national cinemas” (Tasker). This subgenre has elements of an adventure which includes journey, quest, or discovery that takes place in a “fantasy and exoticized setting” (Action and Adventure Films) along with incredible scenes of violent, combative, explosive, and pursuit action sequences. When their inexperienced frustrated director drops them in the middle of jungle to shoot the movie, the actors have to rely on their acting abilities to survive actual real life action and danger. Tropic Thunder belongs in the parodic phase because it ridicules the elements of the action and adventure subgenre. To demonstrate when Damien Cockburn, the director, gets killed by an old landmine, the members of Flaming Dragon (a heroin manufacturer organization) get alerted and the go investigate the area. The actors (Tugg Speedman, Jeff Portnoy, Kirk Lazarus, Kevin Sadusky, and Alpha Chino) believe that Damien faked his death to encourage them improve their performances for their characters. When members of the Flaming Dragon arrive and see the actors, thinking that they are actual U.S soldiers, they start shooting at them. The actors believe that this is part of the script and they shoot at them with their fake assault rifles. After this encounter, the actors realize that Damien staged all of this for them and motivates them to complete the movie. This scene displays that it mocks the adventure aspects because the actors idiotically believe that they are actually filming a movie when really they are not and facing real life danger.
