Imagine: Your’e running a race and your neck and neck with the fastest person in the league. You are thinking “I can win this race”. Then, you push yourself so hard. You move your legs at an astonishing speed and wizz by the fastest person in the leauge. Finally, you cross the finish line first.You won!!!! Hip Hip Horray! At award time, you recieve your giant trophy. You have so much pride and happieness running through you and then you see the last person to finish walk up and see the award people give them a trophy. Your heart sinks! The pride and happiness turned into sadness and rage. You think, “That kid came in last place. How could they get a trophy?” You worked so hard and all they had to do was show up to get a trophy. Participation …show more content…
Those who earn a trophy should feel like they accomplished their goals and they’re getting awarded for it, On the website, http://www.timeforkids.com/news/debate/178646 it states, “Carol Dweck, a psycology professor at Stanford University in California, said, “The trohphy has to stand for something.” She also suggests that it goes to the most improved player, or the one who contributed the most to team spirit as well as those who play the best.” When someone just shows up, it’s hard to see, out of the people who feel strongly about participation trophies, that the real winner is the one who crossed the finish line, not the one who just showed up.Some people might say that participation trophies boost self esteem, however that argument is incorrect because the players who actually win the race feel that all their practice was for nothing and it can give them the wrong idea about doing your best and getting awarded for it. On the website, www.reason.com, it states, “ The latest Reason-Rupe poll finds that when it comes to kids and their tropies, 57% of americans feel that only the winning players should recieve them.”This evidence clearly states that trophies should only go to the winner of the activity or event.
