Tron Comparison Essay

Although the story line is different and new characters are involved, the similarities between Tron and Tron: Legacy are undeniable. The original Tron was released in 1982 and is about a computer hacker Kevin Flynn who was formally an employee of ENCOM. Kevin now runs an arcade and is trying to prove that the five video games he created were stolen by ENCOM’s now senior executive Ed Dillinger. While trying to find evidence Kevin is sucked into ENCOM’s computer where the Master Control is the dictator in the digital world. Inside Kevin teams up with Tron (a security computer program written by Alan Bradley) and Yori (a program written by Lora Baines and Tron’s lover) to destroy the master control program and prove that Ed Dillinger stole the games. Tron: Legacy continues on from the story. During this film Sam Flynn (Kevin Flynn’s son) loses his dad early in life to “The Grid”. Sam responds to a message received from his lost father and is sucked into the grid. Sam is put to the test with various games and is nearly killed by Clu (A program Kevin …show more content…
The call to adventure in both films include both Kevin Flynn and Alan Bradley. In Tron, this occurs when Kevin and Alan are convinced by Lora to hack into the ENCOM computer system. In Tron: Legacy, Alan receives a page from Kevin (we find out later it was actually from Clu) and Sam investigates the page. The crossing of the threshold come at a surprise for both Kevin and Sam in the different films. For Kevin it occurs when he is sitting at a computer and the MCP sucks him into the grid. Sam is also transformed into the grid after sitting at Kevin’s computer. After this, the tests and enemies appear. In Tron, Kevin has to compete in many games and escapes the Master Control Program with the help of Tron and Yori. In Tron: Legacy, Sam also has to compete in these games and is saved from Clu by
