In order to prove that Troy, the ancient city in Homer's Iliad, was true, an amateur German archeologist named Heinrich Schliemann excavated a hill, Hissarlik, in, back then, the Ottoman Empire, in the year 1871. He found which is believed to be Troy, and several other cities from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. And either on or about May 27, 1873, Schliemann reported, "In excavating this wall further and directly by the side of the palace of King Priam, I came upon a large copper article of the most remarkable form, which attracted my attention all the more as I thought I saw gold behind it. In order to withdraw the treasure from the greed of my workmen, and to save it for archaeology, …I immediately had "paidos" (lunch break) called. ….While the men were eating and resting, I cut out the treasure with a large knife….…

EZ Trojan Horse is a mythological tale about the Trojan War regarding a military strategy utilized by the Greeks to breach Troy and ultimate force the island nation into capitulation. After a decade of stalemates and fruitless sieges, the Greeks decide to create a giant wooden horse and give it to the Trojans as a symbol of defeat and a monument for Athena. The horse, conceived of by Odysseus, is built in a mere three days. However, unbeknownst to the Trojans, a skilled force of warriors is hidden inside of the horse. The battle of Troy started specifically because of the abduction of Helen. The fact that there was a battle over a woman shows how important it was for Menelaus to have Helen with him. Paris Taking Helen was a huge problem for Menelaus because Paris taking her meant he was taking Menelaus’s honor as well. We also see in the Iliad to what extent Menelaus and Paris will go to for the possession of Helen when Paris challenges Menelaus to a duel, “we’ll fight it out for Helen and all her wealth.…

Along the expedition home, Odysseus displays his glory by showing off his pride and confidence. While the Trojan War was beginning to die down, Odysseus formulated a plan to spark the war back and leave victoriously. This action lead Odysseus to act in a more positive and self-assured way, which he reveals in the poem. For example, Homer says “of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy” (1.2-5). This quote reveals that Odysseus had the idea to give a wooden horse to the Trojans, as a gift, when it was really used to end the war.…

By looking at the various archaeological and historical evidence, we can determine the historical reality of the so called, Trojan War. I contend, that whilst the main source of information, Homers Iliad, is largely mythological and written not for history but for entertainment, there are still some archaeological factors suggesting there was some form of conflict between Greece and Troy. Thus, the categorisation of the Trojan war as a myth, warrants critical evaluation. I propose the reality behind the Trojan War is highly contorted, and may just be a form of ancient propaganda. As history is written by the victor, the exact reality of the war was recorded by the Greeks, who are known to be largely biased.…

Black Ships Before Troy, which is the adapted version of the Iliad, takes place in 750 BC, in the ancient city of Troy. Detail and evidence from this book shows us that the Trojans and Greeks believed in many gods, worshiping all of them and hoping to be helped when it is needed. When the Trojan war started the gods played a large role in deciding the victor. The gods would choose sides and help in ways like sending bad omens, putting hope into tired warriors, and sometimes helping a mortal escape death. Fate and destiny were strongly believed by the Trojans and Greeks.…

He told Agamemnon that all of Olympus was in favor of an Argive victory, when in fact, he planned on awarding victory to Troy (99). It is highly possible that the Trojan War occurred, given the extent of the evidence that exists to support it; however, due to the amount of time that has passed since its event, it is likely that some details have been changed. There are various written sources to support it, from Homer’s Iliad to Hittite cuneiform tablets. Equally, there is a large amount of archaeological evidence found both at Troy and other ancient sites, such as Mycenae. It seems unlikely that evidence of this quantity and scale could have originated solely from a legend, and thus the Trojan War must have been, at some point, a reality.…

In this rather short account with long-lasting consequences, Paris caused great trouble as he broke the code of hospitality when being a guest of Menelaus. Menelaus, the husband to the fairest women in the world, Helen, had to venture to Crete and he trusted Paris to be a guest at his home with his wife as company. This trust was tarnished by Paris’s actions that followed. Although not many details were provided, and many theories exist of how the next events came about, it is reasonable to assume Paris fell in love with Menelaus’s goddess like wife and kidnapped her to Troy (Hamilton, “The Trojan War” 253-258). Hamilton references to a poem summarizing the ill hospitality, “Paris who coming, entered a friend’s kind dwelling, shamed the hand that gave him food, stealing away a woman” (Hamilton, “The Trojan War” 257). Consequently, when Menelaus arrived home to discover his wife missing, he called upon all of Greece to help him find and bring back his wife.…
