Tristen Kurilla Analysis

Tristen Kurilla is a young boy that killed a ninety year old woman. The surprising thing about this story is how young he is. To give a little background information about Tristen, he is only ten years old and in the fifth grade. Tristen attended Damascus Elementary School which is a relatively great school. Tristen lived with his mother Martha Virbitsky who loved him with all her heart. It is hard to believe that a ten year old could even attempt to kill a ninety year old woman. For further insight, the young boy was on medication and wasn't taking it at the time of the incident. He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Tourette Syndrome. His mother, said that just getting him to do simple task like eating or taking a shower was an all day job. She even said that sometimes he would even rub skin as hard as he can until he could get himself to bleed. Tristen was doing quite well when he was routinely visiting counseling, going to regular check-ups, and taking his medicine. Bernard Brown, Tristen’s family lawyer stated, “ His family is an emotional wreck at the moment and does not feel comfortable taking custody of him”. Tristen was charged as an adult with intentional criminal homicide on his case. The young boy was stationed at Wayne county correctional facility. There he will remain under isolation and twenty-four supervision. The juvenile justice system believes that the juvenile detention center may not be the right environment for him. Prosecutors felt that he might be too dangerous or not mentally ready to be with other kids. In addition, the closet juvenile detention center was eighty miles away from his immediate family.
