“Trista, stop eating the berries. We are almost there.” Shouts the woman holding my hand, pulling me to her side when I stuff a raspberry in my mouth off a bush.
“But I’m hungry.”
She lets out a sigh and stops under a tree close to the playground. Snapping her fingers as she points to the ground.
“Lay the blanket out here. And give me the food. I want to have some before you get a stomachache.” Taking the basket from me.
“I wasn’t going to eat all of it. Was gonna leave you the iced coffee.”
“How thoughtful of you. Pumpkin, hurry up. There’s no one here.”
A man’s head peeking out of the bushes next to us. “Are you sure? Boss, you see any humans?”

“Trista, stop eating the berries. We are almost there.” Pulling on the girl at my side as she steals another raspberry from a bush. “But I’m hungry.” A small frown on her lips.
I let out a sigh and stop under a tree by an empty playground. Snapping to get her attention and point at the ground. “Lay the blanket out here. And give me the food. I want to have some before you get a stomachache.” Releasing her hand to relieve her other two of the basket.
“I wasn’t going to eat all of it. I was gonna leave you the iced coffee.”
“How thoughtful of you. Pumpkin, hurry up. There’s no one here.”
The snake monster peeking from the bushes. “Are you sure? Boss, you see any humans?”
“There ain’t any people. Come out before Evins has to drag you out.”
“I will bite her if she do.”
The girl glares at the oversized garden snake until she comes out to smooth the blanket. Then we all sit to enjoy a quiet lunch. Watching the girl eat her sandwich as she swings her short legs, scarfing the meal. Wondering why I ever agreed to do this, why I am stuck with this girl and her pet. The sound of the monster swallowing raw chicken the most disgusting sound I have heard. I can’t even enjoy my

It’s too hard slithering in the bushes. Sharp sticks poke me and I want to be next to boss on the grass. Evins making her tell me I have to hide. I might scare the humans if I don’t stay out of the way. Like I always do.
But it’s too hard. I have to crawl under branches and stuff. My belly hurts and I want to stand up right and keep my vest clean. My bow always snagging when I turn my head and I worry I might lose it. Boss gave it to me. I don’t want to make her sad. And my hands hurt.
I can stick my head out of the bushes when Evins calls to me, “Pumpkin, hurry up. There’s no one here.”
“Are you sure? Boss, you see any humans?” Stuffing the bow in my pocket.
“There ain’t any people. Come out before Evins has to drag you out.”
“I will bite her if she do.”
I don’t like when people grab at me and touch me because they are being rude. It feels weird and I want to bite them for that. Weak

"Never go into Chutzpah Forest alone," Aunt Margaret always warned, as long as I could remember. "An ancient dragon dwells there and he would love nothing more than to capture you and devour you for supper." As a child, I used to squeal in terror and nod earnestly, reaffirming my promise to her that I would never venture into that dark and quiet forest, alone or otherwise. As I grew into a young woman, however, the warning seemed very childish. Dragons indeed!…
