“Open the door Marissa!” Alexa yelled. “Hold on, I’m doing something!” I yelled back. I got up and opened the door of my room. I’m planning a trip to the Bahamas for spring break of 2015 with all my friends. My friends, Alexa, Cassi, Julianna, and I, are seniors in high school. This year is our last year together because we are going to different colleges. I am Marissa and I am 19 years old. I play two sports, hockey and volleyball. Alexa is also 19 years old and plays volleyball. Julianna is 19 years old and does gymnastics. Also, Cassi is 19 years old and does dance. “What are you doing?” Alexa asked. “Uh…,” I ran and shut my computer, “I’m doing that essay in science. One day we saw a boat but we couldn’t get its attention. I knew there were people around this area. Cassi and I searched the whole perimeter of the island and saw nothing but sand and lizards. I’m pretty sure all of us had major sunburn and wounds all over. We had our fights here and there but I didn’t want us to split up because we need each other to survive. One night I heard a sound coming from the distance but I couldn’t see anything so I waited till the morning to see what it was. I woke up with Juliana, Cassi, and Alexa right by my side completely asleep. I looked out to the distance and didn’t see anything. I went to jump into the water to find some fish with my sharp piece of wood and saw a small boat coming towards us. I jumped up screaming for that boat. I ended up waking up my friends and they helped me get its attention. The boat turned our way and I was 100% sure that it saw

Factors of race, class, and gender are constructed through June Jordan 's accounts of social structures in the Bahamas in 1892 along with connections to her own past experiences as a black woman. Those factors are then deconstructed through her telling of a bond between two students that had transcended factors of race and class and expressed a unification in the struggles of women.
