A River Runs Through It is a novella about fly-fishing and family, told from the first-person perspective of author and major character Norman Maclean. The book is actually an autobiographical account of Maclean. Barely over one hundred pages , the book is one continuous narrative, moving from one episode of fishing to another, without separation by chapters. By describing his fishing trips and related events during the summer of 1937, a much older Maclean seeks to understand the tragedy of his brother’s death, to pay homage to him, and to show appreciation for his father's love and wisdom.…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

Tucked into a valley carved by countless years of erosion, the San Lorenzo River snakes its way down through the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. As it nears UC Santa Cruz, it slows to a mere crawl, forming a swimming hole aptly named the Garden of Eden. Upon first emerging from the trees a small beach filled with a combination of sand from the rivers rage and the fine silt that covered the trail. Nearly invisible waves of heat rise from the sand, making the background appear to animate. Beyond is the river, glistening and shimmering in the midday sun.…

It didn’t make it any better that I was beyond tired. Dragging my feet as I walked, eyes barely open, I was a living zombie. The sun burnt into my eyes worse than a death stare from a hungry gray wolf, in some spots it was like a harsh winter evening, and sometimes if you moved ten feet you would start to sweat a waterfall and would have to move back to the shade. It wasn’t a good day for my service project. Especially with the fact that it was at the end of the week, and I had just gotten off a bone chilling first guide in Fort Mackinac.…

In my last few weeks at Harpers Ferry, a man in his mid-fifties walked into the Provost Marshal’s office. He was a big man, maybe six foot four. Bald, overweight, wearing a red polo shit and sagging cargo pants with sunglasses pressed into his forehead. I was already talking to a family from the Carolinas interpreting the experiences of the town’s citizens after the war, when across the former slave states Provost Marshals were replaced by agents of the newly formed Freedman’s Bureau. They were good visitors, they asked excellent questions.…

It has been a week since we left from Independence, and I finally have some time to sit and write. So much has happened since last time I wrote. For a few examples: crossing the Kansas River, experiencing what it is like to be out on the trail, and not to mention a little love action going on in between Viola and Nathan's son, John. They sit out by the fire for hours, after the rest of us go to bed, and just talk. My wife thinks it is the cutest, but I have some suspicions about this boy.…

As my Mathematics professor always says, “Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.” For some people who live in the third world countries such as Ethiopia and Sudan, even a few dollars or a cup of water is a great help. However, in today’s society, most people only care about themselves and forget to think of others in need. Less and less people are willing to help others. Moreover, some people once accepted help, but they forget that many are like them that need help.…

Once, America wins its independence from England, writers want to break away from the literary influence of Europe. The new era, of transcendentalism shapes society because writers became involved in describing social reform movements, women’s rights, anti-slavery, and they use “logical thinking” and “experimentation” to make assumptions about spirituality, religion, and nature (Johnson Lewis). The Romantic era, brings about new points of view because people do not want to think about the seriousness of life, and the logical way to do things. Writers, from this period, focus more on emotions, fantasy, imagination, and spontaneity (Strickland). During these eras, five different authors, write their literature with similarities and contrasts, which makes them famous throughout history.…
