In 1900, Charles applied for a military disability pension and was turned down. Somehow, he has got to prove to the government that he is Joseph Kello. At some point, the realization hits him that the only way to get proof of his real identity is to find some of the guys he served with in the 214 Pennsylvania Infantry.

From the village of Okawville, in 1905, he plans the long 900-mile train trip back to Philadelphia. Rather than travel alone, he takes his youngest daughter, Lizzie, with him. Arriving in Philadelphia for the first time in 38 years, he sees a city that has changed over the course of his long absence. He remembers names of men that he served with that were in his company.
