350 word limits Essay Question - Other than your Eagle Scout leadership service project, what service have you provided to your community during your high school years? During my high school years, I have primarily provided service through my participation in the Christiana Care VolunTeen program and through the various clubs that I lead. The Christiana Care VolunTeen program allows young adults to help serve at the hospital in various areas, often exposing teenagers to how a hospital operates. Specifically, I worked in the Outpatient Pharmacy, SurgiCenter, and Pathology/Histology Lab, assisting patients and doctors with their various needs and tasks.…
In Nicaragua, the Somoza family had begun a dictatorship, since 1936, that was disliked by most of the population and only supported by the small percent of the elite (Klerlein). There was so much support from the upper class, which was made up of one percent of the population, for the Somoza rule because the dictatorship tended to favor them and discarded the lower classes. Many of the lower class were made up of farmers who had little to no education and the Somoza regime wanted to keep it that way as well (Klerlein). This contributed to the fact that there was a large gap between the “income distribution” and how the elite were starting to take control of land that was owned by the “poorest citizens” (Klerlein). There was political and social…
It was challenging for my dad to adjust to the American language. Also, he thought it was difficult to understand America’s entertainment aspects. He could not understand jokes in movies and he tried to learn about pop culture (singers,…
Have you ever heard of a tap tap? Three summers ago, I discovered a tap tap not just a nickname for banging a pencil on a deck, but a kind of taxi in Haiti. They are called tap taps because the passengers will signal the driver to stop or go by simply tapping on the back of the truck. I learned this fact on a mission trip to Haiti three summers ago. The trip was a very eye opening experience where I learned that I have many things to be thankful for.…
Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…
I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…
If you were to look in my room you’ll probably see a mess clothes all over the floor, papers on my bed, and tennis balls on my desk, you could say that I’m not the most organized person in the world. But upon looking at all that mess, there is a picture hanging on just one nail, collecting dust as if it was some kind of ancient artifact. As I look at it every morning before heading off to school I am instantly reminded of a trip that I now use to define who I am: commitment, compassion, and courage. This was the photo of my trip in Leon, Nicaragua.…
There are many sides to every story and Robert Persano’s documentary Nicaragua…the Dream of a Generation offers a unique view into the Sandinista Popular Revolution. The film interviews Argentine internationalists who contributed to the revolution in various ways, from providing medical care to fighting on the front lines. The filmmakers themselves talk about their own experiences in Nicaragua and the lasting impact it has had on their work. Most importantly, however, the documentary seeks to understand the forces that bound the Latin American people together during a time of war and pronounced division.…

Dominican Republic One of the Latin American countries I would like to visit is Dominican Republic. Whenever my family decides to take a trip to Latin American countries, I usually decide to stay home. The reason for this being one I’m afraid of planes and two someone needs to care of the house. Trying to sing ‘Jesus loves the little children’ in Spanish, which turned out terribly, and losing almost every round of ‘pato pato ganso’, which translates to ‘duck duck goose’, is all part of an experience that is important to me. These moments, which were part of a trip, are most memorable because they helped break down the barriers that come cultural shock. The lives of people in the outskirts of Santo Domingo are much different from my sheltered life in small Kansas City, so I had to accept it and learn from such a shocking experience. On the trip, it was very appalling to see the conditions the people were living in.…
