Trip To Jamaica Research Paper

We had a mission, a goal, and a plan. What we came back with was much more. We came home with a new faith and a new understanding of life. To say it was an eye opener is an understatement. The elders of the church and some people of the community thought we went to Jamaica to help them in their faith with God, but in all honesty, it helped my youth group and each of our faiths even more. Some of the ways it helped us is it made realize if the Jamaican who had very little of anything could worship God to the extent that they did, that we should be able to do the same. My missions’ trip to Jamaica in 2014 was an amazing experience because we spent time with children, helped people who had nothing, and grew in our faith. Two things that I truly enjoy are helping people and being …show more content…
One thing that really stuck out to me was the loudness of the music. It was so loud that for a while after the service was over my ears were still ringing and I was sure I could still hear the songs being played in my head. Because it was so loud and everyone was singing, the only thing I could focus on was the words I was singing and what they really mean. Seeing people with so little dressed in their Sunday best as happy and joyous as they were was something I envied. I wanted to be content with what I had, and I wanted to be so devoted to my faith as they had portrayed it. The happiness they displayed that morning is what I wanted in my life more than ever. With this mission trip to Jamaica it helped me realize the time anyone spends with children is precious even doing the simple things, never take anything for granted because there is people who are less fortunate, and to be open to different ways I can grow in my faith. This mission’s trip to Jamaica had changed the way I look at life. Not only did it change the way I viewed the world, but it also changed the way I viewed

“The best thing about fostering short-term missions with a long-term view is to see God work over time” (Page 47). While in Alaska, I heard stories from people about past trips and how things change each time they come, I heard stories about people accepting the grace God has given them; these stories would not have been possible without the relationships built over time. I will use this going forward because if I am ever asked to lead a mission trip I will want to try and set it up as a trip that can be repeated every year, I do not want it to be a trip we go once and…

History. It is defined as “a chronological record of significant events (as affecting a nation or institution) often including an explanation of their causes” by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. By high school students, it is often described as the class they hate the most. It is hated because it is exactly that - the study of the events that have led us to today. It can bring about controversy, it can bring about confusion, but most of all, it can bring about a sense of shame as the writers of history recognize that most of these events were the result of unnecessary violence and exploitation of both humans and nature.…

A couple weeks ago, Holy Ghost had its annual service trip to the Dominican Republic. I had heard about the trip from Dr. O’Connor when I did the summer enrichment program in 6th grade. I looked forward to going on the trip when I got to Ghost, and I got the chance this summer. At first I was really nervous, but by the second day there I realized how special the trip truly is. I got to give my Spanish a jog, I got to meet a ton of new people, and I had my eyes opened to a new way of living.…

Growing up in a town of about 5,000 people cultural differences were few and far between. Everyone in my town was pretty similar; white, catholic, and family oriented. Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program.…

After Christmas break last year, Laura recounted to us her harrowing mission stories from her time with her 8th grade class and sponsors as they and Arthur had just returned from the Dominican Republic. Laura shared her life-changing experience of helping orphans and conducting two vacation Bible Schools daily, for around 250 kids total. Arthur was working with almost 100 Maranatha volunteers building a church from scratch. We just praise the Lord they survived to tell the tales as Arthur almost cut his legs off with a masonry saw that had a sticky power switch and Laura got to see 12" spiders in the building where she…

On the last week of July, I completed my sophomore service as a volunteer at a Vacation Bible School at a local church. I had gone to the Bible School ever since I was seven but I aged out and decided to become a volunteer. At the Vacation Bible School, the service I preformed was to help the kids and take them to their activities as well as introduce them to Christ. Before the Bible School started, I was nervous and excited to talk to 11 and 12 years old about Christ.…

What I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. The lights were dimmed so people could feel more comfortable and the music consisted of a good balance of upbeat music, and slow music. Songs were sung and people worshiped for about forty-five minutes. This was a very moving experience. Glancing into the audience, it was evident that everyone was engaged in the worship.…

Growing up in Jamaica was not what some may think as ideal, it has been described as a Third World Country, but to me, it was just home. Third world indeed, poor, violent at times; a contradiction, with its sandy beaches, clear blue skies, delectable food, feel good music, and some of the hardest working people one can ever have the pleasure of meeting, who refused to stay where life may have placed them, but strived to climb above those circumstances and attempt to carve out a life for themselves and their children. Let me introduce you to the Jamaica that I grew up in and remembered; I remember the endless summer holidays growing up off the Sligoville Road, in a small district called Mt. Moreland, where the playground…
