Mrs. Watts, and Laura, both had a disability, which largely contributed to the plot. Mrs. Watts knew she would not live long because of her heart issue. Therefore, she moved in with her son and his wife, but was not treated well and ran off to make sure she would be able to see her home town once more before she died. What held him back were his mother, his sister, and one story left behind. Tom’s mother was a very critical mother, but it just came by nature, she was not trying to do it out of anger or to hurt the others feelings, she did it to help her children, but sometimes she pushed too far. Amanda told Tom to do everything and anything she could think of, when it came to his personal life, to help his sister. He felt like he was not living his own life he was just executing his mother’s command even though he was more than capable to live his own life. He also was constantly reminded not to follow in his father footsteps, and run away, but altimetry he did. In The Trip to Bountiful Mrs. Watts desperately wanted to go to Bountiful, but Jessie-Mae, held her back from her dream, until she could not take it any longer and run away.
