Trinidad is an island in the Caribbean that was discovered on July 31, 1498 by Christopher Columbus. Its ethnic breakdown is 34.2% African and 37.6% Indians. Trinidad is mainly an English-speaking country and its economic mainstay is oil and tourism. One of the things Trinidad is known for is its colorful carnivals. These carnivals are held two days before lent and include parades, masquerades, live music and organized parties on the streets. J’ouvert represents the start of the Carnival. Partygoers display through the town in the custom of the Canboulay celebrations. Jouvay as its most commonly known, represents a diverse choice of homemade or humorous costumes. It’s a tradition that began in 1783. Trinidad is also known for its beautiful beaches. One of the most famous beach is Maracas Bay. This beach is about 40 minutes away from the capital, Port of Spain. It features a picturesque drive through mountainous rainforest.
