Essay 2-Final Draft
Trifles is a play about the aftermath and murder mystery of John Wright. An investigation is started to discover the perpetrator of the crime. Mr. Hale originally went to the Wright house to ask Mr. Wright if they could share the cost of a phone, only to discover that he had been hanged. After upsetting the women in the room by stating “Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies?” (Glaspell 1156), the county attorney takes the men upstairs to look for more evidence. The women are all together now. Keep in mind that Mrs. Wright is never seen in the play and is currently in custody. Mr. Henderson is given the task of finding the perpetrator of the murder. He is younger than the men he is working with, although they don’t see him any less fit to conduct work. In the beginning of the play all the men decide to ridicule the women about “worrying over trifles” (Glaspell 1156). At first it appears that he may be the most sensible one out of all the men, but soon after he defends the women he gives a sexist statement. It becomes exceedingly clear that the County Attorney is just like the other men from his time, and only sees them as caretakers. His lack of attention to detail is appalling. Even though he did notice the quilt that Mrs. Wright was making, he saw it fit to crack a joke about it instead of thinking that it could be used to help solve the crime. The County Attorney is completely different compared to Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Hale. He is motivated by finding the truth and unconsciously puts out sexist remarks that are natural to him. He is also typical of the era when it was acceptable for men to have one role and female another. He focuses on common areas and pays no heed to other areas. He feels it is not required or needed even after the women point out certain things he should be looking at. He just brushes it aside as not …show more content…
Society plays a big part in how people react to real life events. People are greatly affected by their upbringing, social standing and life situation. Some are influenced to the point like Mrs. Wright that they stay and suffer the abuse. Become changed by the abuse and then finally crack under the pressures through no fault of their own. Mrs. Hale may or may not be abused however, she is a true friend and plays the role of protector. The County Attorney is perhaps a little chauvinistic but he does his job while trying to appease men.
