Much Ado About Nothing

Trickery and deceit are central themes in Much Ado. Explain how deception is used in this story. How does this lead to love and romance?

In Shakespeare's play; Much Ado About Nothing he introduces the main characters, the two star crossed lovers, known as the young Count Claudio and Hero, the daughter of Leonato whom is the Governor of Messina. With one glimpse, the two instantly fell in love with one another. Claudio cannot hide his feelings for Hero, he decides to share such sentiment with the Prince, and from there the first contrivance commences. Claudio and the Prince plan to win fair Hero’s heart by deceiving her. Claudio listens to the Princes brilliant plan, the Prince plans in (1.1.315-322) saying “I know we have shall have …show more content…
The Prince exclaimed “I will teach you how to humor your cousin, that shall fall in love with Benedick. And I, with your two helps, will so practice on Benedick that, in despite of his quick wit and his queasy stomach, he shall fall in love with Beatrice. If we can do this, Cupid is no longer an archer; his glory shall be ours, for we are the only love gods. Go in with me, and I will tell you my drift.” (2.2.371-378). The plot worked well enough to have Beatrice and Benedick to fall in love with one another.
Overhearing Claudio, Leonato, and the Prince speak happily about Beatrice’s agonizing love, Benedick eavesdrops on what they have to say about Beatrice’s overwhelmed heart. In act 2 scene 3, Benedick cries out “This can be no trick. The conference was sadly borne; they have the truth of this from Hero; they seem to pity the lady. It seems her affections have their full bent” (2.3.223-226).
