Trick Or Treating Safety At Halloween

Improved Essays
Halloween is a fun fall holiday that is full of many traditions and celebrations. Children often dress up in costumes, attend parties or parades and eat seasonal treats. Unfortunately, Halloween has some safety risks. Adhering to the following guidelines can help keep everyone safe and able to enjoy the holiday.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

Children should never go trick-or-treating alone. They should always go in a group that includes adults until they are old enough to stay with a group of friends. When walking from house-to-house, it's a good idea to always stay on a sidewalk or as far on the edge of the road as possible to avoid traffic. When crossing the street, always walk in a crosswalk or at a corner, if a crosswalk isn't available. Reflective tape that is placed strategically on a trick-or-treating bag or costume can also help drivers to be aware of children who are out in the neighborhood.

Don't go to dark houses that are poorly lit. Using a flashlight while walking can help children from tripping or falling, particularly if walking in a costume is difficult. If someone invites children inside of the home, never go in unless the person in well-known. Children should also never accept rides from strangers.

Food Safety

Candy that is received from trick-or-treating should only be eaten if it was factory wrapped. It is never a good idea to accept homemade treats from strangers. Though instances of placing sharp objects or poisoning candy are extremely rare, with the majority of cases being done by parents, it's always a good idea to examine children's candy before any is consumed. Look for evidence of tampering, such as small holes, tears or rips in the candy wrappers. Candy that poses a choking hazard for young children, such as gum, should be removed from the bag before the child consumes it.

With Halloween taking place just about a month ago and me being a first-year college student, I found it suitable to choose a topic that related to both college and the holiday that so many of America’s youth actively participate in these days. So, I began my research; through countless amounts of Google searches and digging through all sorts of news websites, I finally found an interesting article from The New York Times. The title was “Why Halloween at College Is So Frightening” and was written by a man named Mark Bauerlein who teaches at Emory University. The periodical starts off by explaining the scary effects that Halloween can induce on the students and administration across many of today’s college campuses. This is particularly because…

Halloween is like a horror movie, except with drunk teenagers instead of axe murders. It was about two years ago, when we were still living in Germany. It was a fairly peaceful Halloween night and the sun was about to set. My friends and I were walking around the village, what Germans call a town. After about half an hour of us walking around and talking, some acne filled, tall, muscular and older, German teenagers came up to us.…

Halloween, an American tradition where young children can go ‘trick or treating’ around their neighbourhood, however, this has risen the debate of whether this celebration is a safe or a suitable one to be part of. An opinion piece was published on Mamamia on the 29th of October, 2015, titled ‘Why my kids won’t be doing Halloween’, written by Alissa Warren, implies that Halloween is a ridiculous and an inappropriate event to be participated by anyone. In a disconcerting and exasperated tone, Warren targets readers of Mamamia and parents, of this whole issue of the pointless festivity. The article was also accompanied by a visual image that displays some kids in costume, trick or treating, with no one around and followed by a comment, written…
