Trichinella Spiralis

Treatment for Trichinosis involves treating the parasite and the muscle aches. Trichinosis is an infection that is caused by the roundworm, Trichinella Spiralis. Anti-parasitic medication is used as the first line of treatment to fight Trichinosis. “If the Trichinella parasite is discovered early, in the intestinal phase, albendazole (Albenza) or mebendazole can be effective in eliminating the intestinal worms and larvae” (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015). Albendazole works in the intestinal cells of the parasite, by binding to the β-tubulin and inhibiting their ability to combine and from a polymer in microtubules. β- tubulin is a basic structural unit of microtubules, and a component of eukaryotic cytoskeleton. Without microtubules the parasite

Prehistoric sites around Clinton have been shown to be up to 3,000 years old, but European settlers did not arrive until the 18th century. In 1801, the settlers founded a town that they named Burrville in honor of the country's new vice-president, Aaron Burr. However, Burr fell into disgrace, resulting in the town being renamed in 1809; historians believe that the new name was to honor George Clinton, the vice-president who followed Burr, but the name could conceivably honored DeWitt Clinton, George's nephew and the mayor of New York City at the time. Regardless of how the name was chosen, life in Clinton was not without its challenges, including a variety of pests. Certain termites, for example, prospered in the area's climate.…

The purpose of performing physiological tests is to figure out certain characteristics of microorganisms or to reach a conclusion on what an unknown microorganism is. It can be also used to determine what is needed for bacteria to be cultured in or on certain media. Culture media can either be liquid or solid, and they can be used to identify certain characteristics of different bacterial species. This is indicated by the growth or lack of growth in or on certain media. Solid media can also be used to isolate organisms and provide a means to observe their morphology (Wiley 55).…

Thermoregulation and reproduction are energetically costly events that many mammals face. To combat these obstacles, animals have developed the use of seasonally induced torpor and reproductive periods. Both of these events are usually initiated through a predictable environmental factor, primarily photoperiod. These two systems are usually mutually exclusive, but in Sminthopsis macroura, an Australian marsupial that reproduces in the winter, they can overlap since females with torpor being used during pregnancy. This study looked at the impact of reproductive hormones on torpor in the Sminthopsis macroura.…

At the beginning of the Three Kingdoms period, amongst the three kingdoms: Silla, Koguryo and Paekche, Silla would have seemed the least likely to succeed in unifying the Korean peninsula. Silla was the smallest of the three kingdoms, and its location on the southeastern corner of the peninsula was the furthest from China in comparison to Koguryo and Paekche. Although Silla seemed unlikely to prosper, the dynasty was powerful in many areas, leading to their success in Korean history. The Silla dynasty flourished and was one of the longest sustained dynasties in the world, but ended due to complications within the governing system, culture, and religious ideologies at the time.…

The best way to prevent yourself from acquiring the disease is to limit exposure to sandfly bites, wear protective clothing, and apply bug spray to exposed skin. Bug nets can limit the amount of sandflies able to get inside houses, and sleeping with a bed net is highly advised. While cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. tropica can heal on their own, treatment can prevent the development of other infections (Sharma 2015) Options to treat L. tropica, vary depending on location.…

Microtubules are components of the cytoskeleton of the cell that are made up of tubulin. They are the largest component of the cytoskeleton which is a reason why much of cytoskeleton research centers focus on this specific element. In this paper entitled Microtubules Negatively Regulate Insulin Secretion in Pancreatic β Cells, understanding the role these microtubules play is key in understanding the research findings. Microtubules are made up of protofilaments that are composed of a dimer: tubulin that contains two polypeptides. It is important to note that polymerization of microtubules on the positive ends will occur more readily then on the minus end, thus the importance in polarity.…

The sleeping sickness is responsible for 50,000 deaths a year in Africa. Brahic states that they have discovered that the parasite cannot reproduce if its whip-like tail or "flagellum" stops working. Although they are still unsure, as to why the flagellum exists. Keith Gull of Oxford University has a theory, that it assists the parasite to split in two when multiplying in the bloodstream.…
