When Hoig would cite a person or informational resource, he would use a footnote reference marks, as expected. Though, the footnotes were not organized properly. Many times the footnote served no purpose because the information explaining it could not be easily located.
Hoig had the same use of vocabulary throughout the novel, it seemed. Tribal Wars of the Southern Plains was published in 1993 but it still didn’t meet the expected standards for historian writing. Hoig had simple wording and did not challenge the readers. I would have liked to see Hoig use more complex phrases or wording.
Lastly, Stan Hoig was an informative author. He simply knew, understood and demonstrated that knowledge on his topic… But I would have appreciated if he used varying sentence structure. Hoig’s sentences either came across as too choppy or too lengthy. I believe increasing different variations of sentences would have helped more as far as the structure in his writing.
Hoig’s style of writing was unique but it was short of the essentials including lacking organization, simple wording and ineffective use of sentence variations. Improving those areas would have helped Hoig in a stronger
