Known as a psychological thriller, The Machinist is an impressive exploration of a man’s psyche. More importantly, you may say The Machinist is a meditation on guilt. The main point of the film is that Reznik has committed a crime. Yet, instead of taking responsibility of his actions he runs from them, spiritually and physically. When Marie asks him “Is someone chasing you?” he responds “No, but they will when they find out who I am.” Does Reznik know who he is? He will spend the whole film trying make a sense of who he is and what he has done.

However in Spanish, it can also mean “engine driver” or “engineer” which provides the main clue to this movie.) While viewing the movie multiple times, I began to pick up on various symbols that directed my focus on a whole new understanding of the movie. There’s important scenes through the film in which Trevor and Nicholas are taking a ride called Route 66. The images they see reveals a small part of Reznik past, present and future. During this ride Reznik is introduced to some pathway choices- take the right tunnel that leads to hell or take the others that will lead to redemption.
