Family Trends
The trends and patterns that I have identify within my genogram are many of my family members actively use illicit substances. The use of drugs is seen within the last 3 generations of my genogram. Their drug of choice is alcohol, heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana. Although drug use is prevalent many of the members of my family are in recovery. Many of my family members achieved recovery by attending a drug treatment program while others did it cold turkey without any outside support.

My mother married my father at the age of 19. Her and my dad separated when I was 5 years old. My mother and father were married up until the day my dad died. I was 16 years old. My mother and father had been separated for over 10 years. My uncle Danny also followed this trend as he has been married for over 30 plus year and have been separated from his wife Kim for over 20 years. The trend has also continued with my generation as I am currently married and have been separated from my husband for about 2 ½ years. I was amazed at how this trend has moved from generation to generation.
A positive trend that I was able to see within the younger generation was the pursuing of Higher Education. In the top 3 generation the only person that had some college education is my mother. She earned her associates degree in business administration. To be honest I usually complete the genograms on my own with the information gathered during sessions. My coworkers when asked admitted to do this same thing. Prior to this class I really did not understand the benefits of genograms outside of knowing names of family members. However in this class I learn genograms shows trends, patterns and showing the clients these patterns and trends are during sessions. I never let the client see the finish version of the genogram. A lot of my colleagues completed the genograms to meet the requirement of case management. I have done 3 different trainings on genograms and none of the training resonated with me more than this doing this assignment. I see how to use genograms now and how effective this tool can be. I in just 3 short months, I have worked through so much that I did not even know existed within me. I believe genograms can show the person some hidden histories about themselves. It is usually the information hidden to us that cause the most distress in our lives. After completing this assignment I truly see the benefit of genograms and will effectively use them with the clients I
