World War 1 Military Strategies Essay

High and extensive casualties were consequences of a world entrenched in the Industrial Revolution during World War 1. Beginning in 1914, World War 1 introduced new ways to engage in battle. There was a bit of learning curve involved as military leaders on both sides attempted to deal with the rapid changing climate of warfare. I found it interesting that military strategies were not afforded an opportunity for adaption in the midst of these changes. Trench warfare consisted of intricately woven trenches that allowed for troops to move between the front lines and three other types of trenches located behind the front lines in a hidden manner. Allies had an organized tier system that was a three week rotation. This gave tired soldiers a break from the the heavy fighting of trenches located as close as fifty yards from enemy lines. Fighting in trenches was often conducted at dawn and dusk. Chemicals were used in early morning hours to allow the gasses to stay close to the ground for greater effect. World War 1 introduced greater artillery power. Germany attempted to use this superior force of weaponry in their blitzkrieg offense. Intelligence provided was inadequate and led to underprepared troops with a lack of knowledge for the peninsula’s terrain and an underestimation of the force that awaited them. Though only a small bit opposition awaited them in terms of the number of troops, they were faced with a powerful country longing to secure and protect their own land. This sense of duty was indeed a powerful force. Nine months of fighting gave no foothold in Turkey yet resulted in a quarter of a million casualties from French, Australian and New Zealand
