Trebuchet Engineering A trebuchet is a machine used in medieval siege warfare for hurling large stones or other missiles. How this machine works is not to complex but is also fascinating. The object that is being shot is held in the sling, which is on a launch trough whose job is to make sure the shot is straight. Also the trough is there to prevent the sling getting caught in the framework of the trebuchet. When putting the arm of the trebuchet down, it is best to push it down as close to vertical as it can go so that the weight can fall the farthest distance, and so that the sling can get pulled with greatest possible horizontal starting force. As soon as the sling is past the trough it is lifted up and away. Then it is swung out in a partial arc because of centrifugal force, or the sling’s inertia. When the object is being released it is because of the releasing mechanism. The releasing mechanism is a loop of the sling’s rope placed around a prong. The angle of the prong determines the angle of the release. If the prong is straighter it will have an earlier release and a higher trajectory. When the prong is more hooked it

One side of the lever goes up as the other one goes down. To explain for the launch to commence the counterweight must be much heavier than the object or projectile. This has to be simply because the opposite side of the trebuchet has to be lifted up with extreme force to get it moving. For example if there was a little kid on a see-saw and he wanted to reach the top a tree without climbing it. An elephant would have to jump onto the other side to get the little kid to his destination up in the tree. This shows that when the counterweight falls or is released the trebuchet pivots on its fulcrum, releasing the potential energy that was built up turning into enough kinetic energy to throw an object through the

There are more than two different types of trebuchets, but I’m only going to talk about two. The first trebuchet that I want to talk about first is the swinging counterweight trebuchet. The swinging counterweight trebuchet is the classic design of trebuchets. The frame of this trebuchet is fixed to the Earth and the counterweight part consists of a basket on the end of the throwing arm. This was how the swinging counterweight trebuchet worked.…

Advancements in Medieval Warfare; The Trebuchet Throughout the Middle Ages, the art of warfare progressed, and siege warfare was introduced. Many new weapons were created along with the introduction of siege warfare, one of them being the trebuchet. This weapon was developed in the seventh century and used until the fifteenth century. Trebuchets worked by flinging objects over fortress walls and destroying both the fortifications and people at the same time. As many weapons there were both advantages and disadvantages to this advanced technology, for example although it took time to operate, it also was effective in its purpose.…

It was a bigger version of the stave sling that used a large counter weight to propel a 900-kilogram projectile up to 300 yards. There were three designs for the trebuchet that we know was finalized. At first there was the traction trebuchet which was operated by a team of men pulling on a rope. Then there was a hybrid trebuchet, which was a mixture of using counterweights and a team of men to pull the ropes. Engineers in the east and Mediterranean invented this design and it was used to great effect.…

The composite bow, a deadly weapon used by every mongol warrior in Chinggis’ Khan’s rule. It was made of yak horn and bamboo that was glued together and was bound together with a string that stressed against its natural curve that made it stronger than any European weapon. The bow was able to hit a target about 200 to 300 yards away. It is paired with a wide variety of arrows such as armor-penetrating arrows, arrow grenades, messenger arrows and flaming arrows. The composite bow is one of the deadliest weapons used throughout history and was rightly so, given the evidence that the Mongol Empire reigned…

The exterior was crafted from wood and furnished with leather, some would even be decorated with bronze. Standing in these chariots gave soldiers an advantage because of the speed, elevation, and psychological effect it held over foot soldiers. One of the weapons often used atop these chariots was the composite bow. This improvement upon the previous bow was stronger, and had a larger range. Because this bow was designed to curve forward while unstrung, it was subject to even more tension than the regular bow, allowing for more power and distance when the string pulled back was released, as it had to be pulled back farther.…

The trebuchet is a marvel of medieval engineering, it works by using the energy of a falling (and sometimes hinged) counterweight to launch a projectile (such as a rock or a pot of flaming oil), using mechanical advantage to achieve a high launch speed. For maximum launch speed the counterweight must be much heavier than the payload, since this means that it will "fall" faster. the word 'Trebuchet' derived from the Old French word 'Trebucher' meaning to throw over and was also known (along with many other english siege weapons) as the Ingenium from the Latin word ingenium meaning ingenious device! it incorporates mathematical equations that took centuries to perfect and was truly the most devastating siege engine of its time. The concept…

The battering ram was a powerful medieval weapon used by attackers in order to pound upon and break down the walls, gates, and doors of castles. This weapon required a large amount of people and strength to move it efficiently, even as many as 100 soldiers in certain circumstances. It also needed a considerable amount of skill in order for all of the men to move as one rhythmic force, as well as with the proper swing and twist of the battering ram in order to be successful in breaking down the target. The battering ram was created using a large tree trunk, with a metal head fitted on top, with metal support bands on the sides. It was especially effective on gates and doors made of wood.…
