The main form of treatment for schizophrenia is medications, which began about half a century ago. The two fundamental medications are the first-generation antipsychotic (FGA) and second-generation antipsychotic (SGA). The type of treatment and dosage of treatment varies from patient to patient. Doctors evaluate the patients and according to their symptoms they are prescribed either the FGA or SGA. The FGA is known to be very effective on treating positive symptoms and the SGA is broader and relieves both positive and negative symptoms. These treatments can be given in short-term and long-term depending on the patient’s response to the medication and knowing whether the patients are taking these medications properly is crucial in this process. If the patient is free from symptoms for a year the psychiatrist tries withdrawing the drug gradually in hope of no relapses. If there are more than two relapses within a five year period most expert’s recommendations are continuing medications for the rest of their lives. Yet there are actually scholars that say that some individuals with schizophrenia recover and do not need ongoing treatment. Some scholars believe that patients are better off without any treatment.
