Abstract To treat psychological disorders, psychotherapy is commonly used. Psychotherapy is the treatment of psychological disorders through talking and other psychological methods (Bernstein, 2014). There are several types of psychotherapy. Those types are: psychodynamic psychotherapy, humanistic psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy. Psychotherapy methods include individual, group, family, and couples therapy. Self-fulfillment is something strongly focused on in humanistic theory (McLeod, 2007). Client-centered and Gestalt therapy are classified under this approach. Client-centered therapy is led by the client. The client chooses what to talk about and when to talk about it without judgement from the therapist (Bernstein, 2014). In client-centered therapy, the therapists must show unconditional positive regard, empathy, and congruence (Bernstein, 2014). Showing these things makes the client feel more comfortable, and open to talk. Gestalt therapy creates conditions that encourage clients to be self-aware, self- accepting, and unified (Bernstein, 2014) This type of therapy also emphasizes conversation between the therapist and the client (Corey, 2005). Staying with the feeling is something commonly practiced in Gestalt therapy. Behavior therapy encompasses many different techniques for modifying behavior. Those techniques include systematic desensitization, modeling, positive reinforcement, extinction, and aversion therapy (Bernstein, 2014). Systematic desensitization therapy is when a client visualizes an anxiety causing situation, but is able to stay calm (Bernstein, 2014). Modeling is showing the desired behaviors to clients (Bernstein, 2014). Positive reinforcement is giving a reward to a client when they perform an action that is desired (Bernstein, 2014). An example of positive reinforcement is when a child receives an allowance from his or her parents for completing a chore. Extinction is when a conditioned response, or a response provoked by a certain stimulus, disappears (Bernstein, 2014). Aversion therapy is when a stimulus is made less attractive (Bernstein,
