Treat The Fifteen-Year-Old Girl Without The Parent's Consent

The psychologist should agree to treat the fifteen year old girl without the parents consent. Illinois law allows a psychologist to provide therapy to any minor 12 years of age or older without the consent or prior knowledge of their parents (405 ILCS 5/3-501). The therapy is limited to 5 sessions lasting no longer than 45 minutes per session. However, any additional therapy will require consent by a parent or guardian. The psychologist should agree to treat the girl not only because it is perfectly legal, but because it’s ethical and the girl seems as though she is in need of treatment. For instance, the girl stated that she has recurring nightmares of being knifed by a man. She also stated that she’s afraid of boys and doesn’t want anyone to touch her. The girl also states that she has several phobias which imply that she has a large amount of fear and anxiety. The girl is definitely in need of some sort of treatment. The girl also states that she doesn’t feel attractive or likable which may imply that she has some issues with self esteem or even depression. These are all adequate reasons for the psychologist to provide treatment for the girl.
Upon making the decision to treat the girl the psychologist should obtain assent from the girl and provide her with information regarding her treatment such as the nature of the therapy, the time frame, the potential risk, alternative treatments available and fees if any that are associated with the service (3.10/10.01, American Psychological
