This book is about a young girl named Charlie whose father and older brother have to leave and find work building roads in the North during the Depression. When Charlie’s mother dies in childbirth, she is stuck with her other siblings and older cousin, Mirabel to watch them as they take care of the farm in Massachusetts. Later in the book Charlie befriends an African American girl named Phoebe. A new family in town adopted Phoebe. The town doesn 't like that Phoebe is African American, but Charlie doesn 't care and wants to be her friends. The painful poverty and unfairness of the Depression era affects Charlie and makes Charlie more aware of the impact of prejudices and her power to make changes in the world and her own situations. From this book we learn again about how hard it was to be part of the Depression. We see the struggles that Charlie faces not only at home, but also with her community and her friend Phoebe. This book is about a 13-year-old boy named Daniel whose family struggles to survive in New York during the Great Depression. Daniel shines shoes, his mother takes in laundry and is desperate to find work, and his father leaves to find work. He is now the man of the household and takes care of his sick mom and baby sister. They are struggling a lot and some days have nothing to eat. He sometimes even has to beg for food on the streets. During this hard time Danielle tries his best to stay brave and take care of his family the best he can while his father is gone. Throughout this book we are able to get a powerful picture of The Depression and the affect it had on many people. I liked this book because it really showed what is was like during this time and how everyone was struggling. This was a time of sadness and suffering, which we really are able to understand when reading this book. I actually felt like I was in the story and was able to really feel for Daniel and the other
