“Treasure”. It may seem like a simple word but it's not. This word can mean and be so many things for different people. For example, treasure can be a physical thing, or it can come from within, and can even take place in those around you. The short story called “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” written by Walter Dean Myers, shows that inner treasure is the most important type of treasure and is worth fighting for. When Greg first meets Lemon, he notices a striking appearance; “ His black, heavily wrinkled face was surrounded by a halo of crinkly white hair and whiskers that seemed to separate his head from the layers of dirty coats piled on his smallish frame” (20). This atypical description of a homeless man reflects an angelic image which foreshadows his goodness. This quality is once again seen in his actions. To protect Greg, he willingly throws himself down the stairs to insure Greg’s safety from the thugs. This action portrayed his selfless character in which he risks his own life to save Greg’s who is a stranger whom he barely knew. His wisdom and good character are also shown through his words. After Lemon throws himself down the stairs, Greg asks him if he’s hurt;“‘Nothing that ain’t been hurt before,’ Lemon Brown said. ‘When you get as old as me all you say when something hurts is, ‘Howdy, Mr. Pain, sees you back again.’ Then when Mr. Pain see he can’t worry you none, he go on mess with somebody else’” (25). The quote shows his wise character and the pain that he has gone through. With his selfless actions, wise words, and angel-like physical appearance, a homeless man reveals his true character and
