At the end of the story he finally realizes that the pearl was no good for the family. For example, “And Kino drew back his arm and flung the pearl with all his might” (Steinbeck,p.90). In other words, Greg wants to get away from what is forced from him and he dealt with this situation by aimlessly and rebelliously walking down the streets. Most humans sometimes stray away from what is expected by others to cope with the different things they are facing, whether it be perilous, discouraging, or frustrating. Additionally, Lemon Brown desperately protects his valuables and Greg by hurling “his body down the stairs at the men who [has] come to take his treasure” (Myers 4). In the story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, and The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the authors show us that just because somebody thinks something, it does not make it true. In The Pearl, the main character Kino finds a giant pearl and is consumed by wealth, but later learns that all he really needs is his family. In “The Treasure of Lemon Brown,” a teenager named Greg is longing to play basketball, but can not; then he meets a washed up old blues singer that tells Greg a story that changes his perspective on life. The news stirred up something infinitely black and evil in the town.” This shows how the pearl changed everyone's values because the town became obsessed with the pearl and jealous of Kino.
