Last Thursday, I had the amazing opportunity to watch the play, Precious Memories, during the 10th Annual Appalachian Festival. Accomplished musician, Sue Massek, preformed the entire play as one-woman show. Si Kahn, a well-known folk music performer and community coordinator, originally wrote the play. The play centers upon Sarah Ogan Gunning, unacknowledged, yet significant figure in the world of American labor movement and folk music. Throughout the play Gunning presents a thoughtful and passionate monologue in which she is speaking directly to the memory of dead older sister, Molly.…

Autobiographical memory, sometimes termed personal memory, is a combination of episodes recollected from an individual's life. When considered collectively, autobiographical memories serve as the basis for a person's life story. These memories help form a person's sense of identity and self-image. Autobiographical memory is quite distinct from the memorizing of words, pictures and lists that have traditionally been studied in laboratory settings.…
Patricia Hampl’s “Memory and Imagination” provides a coherent insight about what a memoir consist of. Hampl begins to explain that a memoir is “a matter of transcription,” meaning that one has the power to present what details they choose to share. As a memoirist, you soon begin to question whether your memory is a reliable source or if your mind filled those empty gaps with desirous details. However, those memories that we simply remember must have been part of a life-changing moment that was not apparent to us at that moment. Although one intended goal could be accuracy, writing a memoir could help one discover what they know compare to the assumption of what happened.…

The “Lost Boys” spent many years fleeing from country to country in Africa trying to escape the fighting going on in and around their homes.…

Board games, found in almost every home, vary in popularity and demographic. Sorry is probably the least popular, and appeals only to older kids. Although very popular with younger kids, our next game, Candyland, is not popular with the adults who are tired of playing it. Life is also only liked by kids; what adult wants to spend their free time paying bills? On the other hand, Clue is loved by many age groups for its wonderful story line and it's well-loved characters.…

Having a post-memory can effect the way that you live everyday. If your post memory is tragic or sad, it can be scaring to have to keep living with that post memory. This event would ultimately effect how a child would grow up or how a normal person would react to certain things that go along with that event that was stated. My post memory involves a supposed old wise old man who people would call their grandpa.…
Throughout Frankenstein, "Miss Brill", and "To Jane: The Recollection", the reader is exposed to the various ways nature can isolate the individual from the toils of societal life. The tranquility and placidity of nature is influential in the individual 's willingness to isolate themselves from the society that they are apart of. This is most evident in "Miss Brill" and her ability to isolate herself in her surroundings and create a fantasy world. Mansfield 's descriptions of the public garden evident in the band 's "louder and gayer" music filling the air, the descriptions of the old man in the "velvet coat", the husband and wife in the "dreadful Panama hat and…button boots", the old people who were "still as statues", and the little…
Nostalgia, as defined by Tom Vanderbilt, is a form of propaganda, an exercise in laughter and forgetting, in which the right visual iconography and perceived authenticity can create a longing for an existence which is no longer possible and was in fact never possible. There is no denying that no matter what year a person was born; they have experienced a form of nostalgia at some point in their lives. In The Nostalgia Gap, Tom Vanderbilt further explains nostalgia and the different ways in which it demands to be felt. Apart from that, his main purpose for writing the article was to bring forward the idea of what he calls “the nostalgia gap.”…
