Beowulf is the story of a warrior who fights against monsters to gain glory and the treasure of south-Scandinavian cultures. Beowulf is a heroic story in general however when I read Beowulf, I realized that not only the story tells about the hero who fights against monsters alone but the treasure in the story also plays a significant role throughout the story and also serves many functions. For example, treasure takes form as a legacy when the father passes armor to sons. Treasure also takes the form of a prize when Beowulf won over Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Thus, the treasure is useful when serves as weapons because it saves Beowulf’s life and brings back the happiness to the sailors who are passing this way. There is another theme of the story when Beowulf fights with Grendel that treasure plays a significance role for life-saving again in the story. The author mentions, “ Time and again, Beowulf’s warriors worked to defend their load’s life, laying about them as best they could, with their ancestral blades”(B. 793-795). The explanation of the story mentions Beowulf’s warriors use “ancestral blades” and hoping they can somehow help to kill Grendel and save his lord’s life because they know that Beowulf’s life is important to them. They also do not know that the weapon cannot kill Grendel but they are trying to use the most valuable weapons that they have to fight beside Beowulf. It leads to my understanding that Geats warriors also use valuable blades to help Beowulf and if Beowulf wins and kills Grendel people of Danes will be back to happiness again after suffering from fear for a long
