Tread Water Poem

Decent Essays
Upwards, your lungs craving air; the muscles in your body ache as you emerge up to the surface. Take a breath, feel the air rush back into your lungs, colour rush back into your cheeks. You were dying - only for a moment, but you were drifting away, being engulfed into the murky darkness. It will happen again, someday. Everyone gives in at the end, they claw at the water, resist with the small ounce of energy they have left, hold on the lonely drop of hope in all their minds despair; but sooner or later their eyes roll back, they feel nothing but numbness, they let the water take them, pull them, drag them down like it did to all the other lonely souls that were once just like you.
Everyone tries to tread water; no one wants to die. So I didn’t.

However, in today’s society, most people only care about themselves and forget to think of others in need. Less and less people are willing to help others. Moreover, some people once accepted help, but they forget that many are like them that need help.…

"Poetry is about slowing down, you sit and you read something, you read it again, and it reveals a little bit more, and things come to light you never could have predicted." (New Criterion). This is a direct quote from Mark Strand himself and this idea about poetry couldn’t be anymore true. In “The Tunnel,” written by Strand, is about a man who is being stalked by a strange individual for days which slowly made him insane. Even though there is a physical story, there is a greater meaning hidden in this poem and this hidden message deals with judgment.…
