These books fit perfectly in to the lectures regarding the fight for Civil Rights of African Americans. John Lewis was involved in many of the tide-turning events that happened during this period. The start of his journey facing down the evil of segregation began by joining the Fellowship of Reconciliation (F.O.C) and taking part in nonviolent sit-ins. These nonviolent protested usually ended with the protesters being met with brutality and often jail time.
John Lewis’ journey aligns him with another organization named the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee to join the Freedom Riders. He rode with the Freedom Riders throughout the South and then split his time with them to help register African Americans in the South to vote. As time went on, John Lewis was elected to the executive committee of the SNCC and eventually a chairman for the organization.
