On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot by George Zimmerman. He had just climbed over the fence of a gated community and was walking back to his Uncle’s house. George Zimmerman was the communities watch because of a recent spree of burglaries. He walked up to Martin and asked him some questions, they both engaged in a scuffle, and George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin(CNN). Martin’s death caused a number of controversies. The first being whether or not he instigated the fight and caused Zimmerman to fear for his life. The second being whether the trial really brought justice to his death(Cohen). And lastly, what his death caused in the black community (Cox).

Some believe that the case itself proves that you as an individual can go looking for trouble and have it declared self defense (CNN). Other’s find that the evidence presented does not create compelling story that Zimmerman was racist and just wanted to get off on beating up a black kid. So the prosecutors had to play to emotions and sell Zimmerman as a cold hearted killer hunting for a young innocent child. All the while, the prosecutors brought up evidence that would be dismissed because no solid conclusion could be drawn from it (Cohen). On Zimmerman’s side, he had wounds on the back of his head, bruises on his face, and a fractured nose to prove that he had a physical confrontation with Trayvon Martin. In the end there was simply not enough evidence to convict Zimmerman of second degree murder or manslaughter. So the question naturally poses itself, was justice brought to Trayvon Martin.
