George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder on April 11, The trial began on June 24, 2013,when they chose to have an all female jury.
George has been charged with many other things including, choking and threatening his girlfriend. The woman did not to pursue the charges. Shot by George Zimmerman in 2012, seventeen year old Trayvon Martin had his life cut short. Zimmerman, who volunteered for his local neighborhood watch committee in Sanford, Florida, was acquitted of the homicide of Martin. He was released because evidence to contradict his claim of self-defense was not present, also, the state of Florida adopted so called, “Stand Your Ground” laws that supports Zimmerman’s case. “Stand Your Ground” laws eliminate the duty to retreat, or an attempt to get away, from a threatening situation and permit the use of self-defense. These laws root from the Castle Doctrine, which stated one did not have the duty to retreat on their own property, “Stand Your Ground” laws expanded this policy to anywhere a person has…

Answering the question as to whether or not I think the case was handled properly provides little challenge when considering the basics: a young man was killed, the person who killed the young man was tried by a jury, and the accused was acquitted of the crime. In essence, the criminal justice system worked when viewing this case from that overarching perspective, but when we consider how we got from the death of Trayvon Martin to the acquittal of George Zimmerman, I am of the opinion the case was not handled properly and this brings me to the challenge of explaining "Why not." Neither Zimmerman following Martin, nor Martin walking through the neighborhood, constituted a crime. Although I am of the opinion that Zimmerman should have ceased following Martin when the dispatcher told him to do so, the fact he continued is not a crime as he was not legally obligated…

Because Zimmerman is a neighborhood watch volunteer/ police officer, he should be trained to know how to handle a situation like this appropriately. He could’ve simply told Trayvon to get on his knees and put his hands up if he really felt unsafe. Instead he felt that he needed to take Trayvon’s life which took it way too…

Trayvon Martin’s death was an injustice due to three different factors. To start, Trayvon was racially profiled on his walk home. The white neighborhood watchman felt threatened by the unarmed boy, then fatally shot him. The killer was never arrested or found guilty in court for his actions. The state found him innocent because it was pretty impossible to prove he was guilty, as long as he claimed it was self-defense, allowing Zimmerman to return to his life and place a bigger threat on each African American individual, giving them the thought that a white man can kill a black man with no…

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

One of the most controversial Amendments today is the ‘Right to Bear Arms.’ As I get older, I see life a lot more differently and how the Amendments can either be used in our favor as Americans or hurt us. To be more clear, the ‘Right to Bear Arms’ is the second Amendment of the United States Constitution passed by Congress September 25, 1789. Ratified December 15, 1791, the first 10 amendments form the Bill of Right. It is a well regulated Militia; being necessary to the security of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.…

What if you were on trial for first degree murder? In the movie 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose, a young eighteen year old male was on trial for supposedly murdering his own father. The twelve men on the jury were faced with different opinions and facts that questioned their morals and values in life. I feel as if this movie did have “worth” in my life. I think the movie had worth because no one should ever be stereotyped, judged, and accused based on what other people say.…
