Travis Pelts: A Short Story

Improved Essays
In August 2014, our friend Travis Pelts came to our household with two little fuzzy puppies. They were small, round, healthy girls, with brown eyes and little black pointed ears. Their hair was ash gray and blue mix with brown markings blending in around the legs and bases. One was bigger than the other my husband chose that to be his and named her Clara Beth, the other was mine. Choosing a name for her was difficult for me, she was a small petit little pup, but had kind eyes and was watching everything. For a few days it was a dilemma for me, until she started following me everywhere watching my every move; it reminded me of my Grandmother who passed when I was a small child. My grandfather told me she would always be there to watch over me; she is named Sylvia, after her.
Sylvia and Clara Beth are extremely high energy and extremely intelligent dogs. They hang out together most of the time. When Junior gets home from work they begin leaping up and downwards along the porch showing their excitement. They seem like they are taking turns on a trampoline. Clara Beth is still larger, more muscular than Sylvia, but is lighter in color with not as much brown. Her head is shaped like a dingo and when she looks at you, her eyes are squinted with a curious look. Sylvia is more streamlined dog her coat is softer yet darker than Clara Beth’s, her head is shaped

They are really possessive and protective of us here. Yet, when other animals like pigs or goats or chickens are around they both induce a leaning to want to herd them. Sometimes Clara Beth gets too aggressive. Sylvia is more laid back with other animals and will even lay among them not stirring. The stray cats here can even walk up to her when she is outside and sniff her while she lays in the sunshine watching me do chores outside; she does nothing but watch them. Clara Beth chases stray cats; she is not nice to them. We have a cat and she cleans him, which is

My favorite folk tale is “Pecos Bill”, a famous American folk tale. I like this folktale because it explains how Pecos Bill uses his strength and bravery to get past obstacles in his way and do good deeds. Pecos Bill uses strength, but also bravery in his life, and this implies that strength can’t do any good if you’re not brave. The theme of the folktale is “Be ready for whatever life brings your way”, and Pecos Bill was because he had strength mentally and physically, but most important, he had…

It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…

We drove through woods on an unconstructed road called Vanderslice road, which is named after her family.
