In the class, he is a mad scientist, infatuated with the human body and the nature that surrounds him. Outside of the classroom however, he is a savior and a caregiver to all athletes he encounters. Travis Holifield, commonly known as “Doc”, is a science teacher and a sports medicine physician. Holifield’s exceptional love for his jobs has inspired many of his past and present students to study medicine, just like him. Surprisingly, Holifield’s path to becoming a scientist or a sports medicine physician was not easy.
He is usually seen wearing a polo shirt, khakis, and brown dress shoes. He also wears a smile that can light up any room and his passion for his careers is seen in it. As he teaches, his bubbly attitude towards science is felt …show more content…
Holifield grew up surrounded by sports such as baseball and football. However, in the ninth grade he was struck in the back playing football. His vertebrae moved out of place and he lost sensation in his right leg. As he begins to attend physical therapy, he realizes that he has a love for the medical career. Growing up, both of his parents were teachers. When Holifield brings home a bad report card in the middle of his ninth grade year, his father punished him,
Hill 2 disallowing him to play sports. “Growing up I hated school, but after I got hurt and I was taken out of sports I found that I have a love for science,” states Holifield. With sports out of the way,
Doc had ample time to focus on his studies.
After finishing high school, Holifield decides to study physical therapy. When he applies and does not get accepted into the program, he then decides to try sports medicine. Holifield then realizes that studying sports medicine has been his passion all along. After achieving his degree in sports medicine, he has nowhere to go. Holifield then learns that by having an educational degree he would have a better chance at getting a job. Doc stated that he got into teaching …show more content…
Not only does Holifield help high school students, but he also helps students in college.
Many come and do internships with him. He has the patience to take his time with the students to show them the different steps it takes to help an injury. Holifield says that he did not always have patience but one person changed all of that: his down syndrome daughter Lynda Grace. Holifield carries on to tell how his daughter has taught him so many things and has changed his whole perspective on life. Now he is able to take the patience he has learned and apply it to teaching his students. Holifield's wife stated,” Since we have had Lynda Grace, you can definitely tell a difference in him. Not only is he more patient but you also get to meet people you never thought you’d ever meet before.” Travis Holifield is not only a teacher but he is also an eternal student, constantly learning.
