Traveling With Lennie

George is the most intelligent of the rach crew, even though he is not as large as most. George is a “small and quick [man], dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features” (Steinbeck 2). Being a small restless man traveling the country might be a man seen as weak. It’s possible that one reason why George is traveling with Lennie is because Lennie provides a sense of security and can be a useful tool to get work. George is also regarded as “a smart little guy” by Slim and that it’s strange for him to be traveling with Lennie known as a “cuckoo” (Steinbeck 39). Though George is traveling with a mentally challenged childlike man, he uses his knowledge to get them jobs and a paycheck. He uses Lennie’s strength and brute at their advantage,
