Traumatization In Elie Wiesel's Night

Many people have survived the Holocaust and it’s safe to say that a lot of people who got out were feeling terrified, sad, and traumatized. Millions of people who were unlucky died there, sometimes from the beginning, and a majority got transported there to burn in gas chambers. Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, lived through this experience and for him and millions it was damaging to them physically and mentally. He conveys this theme of traumatization through various literary devices such as diction, details, and imagery. In the end, Elie tells his story using literary devices that help us understand and sympathize with him and the tough destructive situations he went through at the concentration camp. An example of detail conveying the theme is when he asks himself,” Could this be just a nightmare? An unimaginable nightmare?” This depicts Elie growing scared of what was happening to him and the people in the concentration camp, this detail showed that he didn’t want this to be real and that it couldn’t be happening because of how bizarre and unbelievable it was. Another example is when he starts telling himself that he would not forget what happened to him and everybody that day in the concentration camp. This detail shows that he vows himself to never forget what happened and what he witnessed on that first day. Wiesel uses diction to show the harsh ways people described the concentration would be and how they would all end. He uses imagery to give us an image of what it felt like to be there the first day and uses details to show us the tiny things that indicate how terrifying it was to be in the concentration camp. The Holocaust was an event that many were forced to live through, and Elie’s story sheds some light on the event that and I personally think that describing is easy for people to do, but to live it is another story, so we shouldn’t this part of history repeat
