There are two different types of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). One type of a TBI is called an open head injury. An open head injury is caused when the skull is punctured. Not all of open head injuries are fatal. When they are not fatal, then they usually cause a person to lose behavioral or sensory functions. These function loss is in the parts controlled by the area of the brain that is injured. The other type of brain injury is called a closed brain injury. This occurs when the head is hit so hard that it makes the brain hit the side of the skull. Because of so much force when the brain hits the skull, it breaks connections between parts of the brain.

They range from les severe to more severe. The first level of a head injury is called a concussion. This is the least severe level of a brain injury. A concussion is when a person looses a slight bit of consciousness. This can be anywhere from seconds to about 30 minutes. Often times concussions are followed by frequent headaches or dizziness and fatigue. The second level of brain injuries is called contusions. This is the middle level of brain injuries. These usually come with a mild brain injury. Contusions can cause something called a hematoma. A hematoma is caused by blood vessels inside of the brain bursting. The hematoma might grow. When it does this, it can put pressure on the brain. When you have a mild brain injury, you usually lose consciousness longer than when you have a concussion. It usually lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The third level of a brain injury is called a come. This is the worst level of brain injuries. It is the most severe. A coma is when you are unconscious for days up to weeks or longer. People who are in a come do not respond to any type of stimuli. A person who is in a come might experience an anoxia. This is when the brain is not getting oxygen supplied to
