Traumatic Brain Injury Research Paper

Dear University of Maryland Athletic Department, A person experiences a traumatic brain injury when there is an impact or sudden motion that brings the head to an abrupt stop, slamming the brain into the skull. This injury is known as coup-contrecoup. When the brain starts to bounce back and forth inside of the head then that part of the brain that hits the skull will be damaged, meaning the brain is injured on direct impact. When the brain bounces back to the opposite side of the skull then the opposite side of the brain is also injured. Coup-contrecoup injuries are comprised of damage to the brain at specific points in which the brain was impacted or damaged to a large part of the brain, which is also known as focal and diffuse injuries. This is import to know because athletes can experience trauma without a direct impact to the head. Another factor that shows the frontal and temporal lobes are at risk is when the head rotates the front of the head moves further than that of the rest of the head. Therefore the frontal and temporal lobes move further than the rest of the brain does which causes more damage to these parts of the brain in particular. Damages to the temporal lobes affect a person’s memory and specific language. The part of the temporal lobe, either left or right hemisphere, that is damaged is determined by which memory functions are affected.
