"Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is something everyone should know about; every year 1.7 million people are affected from traumatic brain injury and the number keeps rising" (Xu L). I was not familiar with traumatic brain injury until I experienced it myself. Understanding what traumatic brain injury is, the effects of it, and how to recover from it are all important information to know.
Traumatic brain injury is a brain dysfunction caused by an outside force, usually a hard blow to the head. "TBI is the leading cause of death in people under the age of 45 in the world, contributing to the death of 50,000 people"(Werner). There are many ways you can get TBI. The most common cause is a fall from …show more content…
"The most common form of a TBI is a concussion"(CDC). This can be caused by direct blows to the head, force from a whiplash injury, violent shaking of the head, or gunshot wounds. A concussion is caused when the brain receives trauma from an impact or sudden movement change. "Blood vessels may stretch in the brain and cranial nerves could be damaged"(KBK). When a person gets a concussion, they may lose consciousness for a brief amount of time. During a concussion a blood clot can occur in the brain and be fatal. It can take anywhere from a few months up to a few years for the concussion to …show more content…
A contusion is when your brain gets bruised or bleeds"(CDC). If a large enough contusion is sustained, you may have to get it surgically removed. "A coup-countercoup injury is when contusions are at the site of the impact and on the complete opposite side of the brain"(KBK). This occurs when the force is strong enough to cause a contusion on one side of the brain and causes the brain to slam into the opposite side of the skull causing the additional contusion. Diffuse Axonal injury can be caused by shaking or strong rotation of the head, by rotational forces such as with a car crash. Injury occurs because the unmoving brain moves later than the movement of the skull, which causes some brain structures to tear. This disturbance is enough to cause permanent widespread brain damage, coma, or death.
"Penetrating injury occurs when the brain is impacted by a bullet, knife or other sharp object that forces hair, skin, bones, and fragments from the object into the brain"(Mayo Clinic)." A through-and-through injury occurs if an object enters the skull, goes through the brain, and exits the skull. Through-and-through traumatic brain injuries include the effects of penetrating injuries, plus additional shearing, stretching and rupture of brain tissue"(Brumback). "The devastating traumatic brain injuries caused by bullet wounds result in a 91% firearm-related death rate
